Charles Edward "Chink" Funder-burg went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 25th, 2011. The family will have a private viewing on Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Bishop Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at Victory Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Jody Domingue and the Rev. Rusty Fuller officiating. Charles was born December 17, 1927, in Wilburton, OK to John Henry and Rhoda Funderburg. He was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him. One of 10 children, Charles' childhood was spent in Wilburton with his loving family and friends. He was actively involved in all types of sports and was an avid sports fan. Upon graduation from high school, he followed his older brothers, enlisting in the US Army. He served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division in Japan until his discharge in 1949. Charles was a forming member as a 1st Sgt. in the 143rd Engineer Treadway Bridge Company in the National Guard in Wilburton, OK in 1950. He was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict from 1950 through 1952, served in Germany, and continued his service in the National Guard until his honorable discharge in 1963. On June 25th, 1950, he married Joan Kelley, of Wilburton, with his loving daughter, Teresa, born 3 years later on July 24, 1953. Charles attended East Central University and was employed by Mobil until his retirement in 1990. Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Joan; his parents, John Henry and Rhoda; his brothers, Floyd, Lewis, O.C.; and sister, Eula Self. Charles is survived by his daughter, Teresa and son in-law, Keith Murray, of Norman; grandchildren, Corey Charles and wife, Stephanie Murray, of Stratford; Nicholet Murray, of New Braunfels, TX, and Sara Murray, of Norman; five precious great-grandchildren, Sydney, Bailey, Hunter, Megan and Shane. Brothers, James Funderburg, Benny Funderburg, Jack and wife, Betty Funderburg, Stanley and wife, Joyce Funderburg, and sister Norma Jean and husband, Kenneth Major; sister-in-law, Anna Funderburg, many nieces and nephews, his loving companion Nancy Bell her daughter, Linda, and sister, Teresa; his brother-in-law, Jerry and wife, Annette Kelley, and sister in-laws, Katherine and Janie Kelley and Brenda Grubbs. Chink possessed an array of admiral qualities. He was a spiritual, generous and loving man with a strong sense of family, quick wit and keen sense of humor. He was a very compassionate and selfless person who always thought of others before himself. He even went so far as to reach out to strangers if he saw another in need. He had a very tender heart, and enriched the lives of all who knew him. His passing will be felt by all. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Bishop Funeral Home in McAlester. Funeral service will be held at Victory Park Baptist Church in McAlester on Tuesday at 10 a.m. followed by graveside services at Memorial Park Cemetery in Ada at 3 p.m. with Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard.
