Sylvania came with his family to Iowa in 1840, when he was four years of age. He lived in Henry County, Iowa, until he enlisted as a Private on 17 Sep 1861 at the age of 25 years of age. He mustered in Co D 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. Sylvania received a disability discharge from Co D on 26 Feb 1862 at Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
In the fall of 1863 he moved to Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa, engaging in various occupations until 1871, when he founded the Sidney Nursery. He married Charlotta Simons of Sidney on 27 Aug 1863. Sylvania was a member of the I.O.O. F.
In the 1885 Census Sylvania and Charlotta were living in Sidney. In the 1900 Census they were living in Los Angeles, California. Sylvania's occupation was listed as a nursery man.
Sylvania died in 1918 at the age of 81 years 7 months 26 days.
