In 1880 he immigrated from Canada to New York where he worked in the mercantile business until 1891 when he removed to California.
In 1892 he entered Hastings College of Law, graduating with the class of 1895. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Law degree from the University of California.
In June of 1895 he began his long career in law, first practicing as an attorney in Martinez.
He met Melvina I. McKenzie, a teacher and graduate of San Jose Normal School, they were married in 1897.
He becomes District Attorney for Contra Costa County and goes on to be elected Supreme Court Judge in Nov 1914.
Politically he was a Republican and served as Chairman of the Republican Central Committee during the campaign of 1908.
