U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents to New York, in 1825, studied law in Lewiston, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Albion, New York. He was elected judge of the Supreme Court for the eighth judicial district, serving (1857-68). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, served until1870, when he was appointed by President Grant as US Attorney for the southern district of New York, serving (1870-72). He was elected a judge of the Supreme Court of New York State, serving (1872-87). He then resumed the practice of law and was a member of the council of the University of New York City, until his death at age 83.
