Location note: There is no gravestone for Martha. According to the church secretary, Martha was buried in the cemetery and most likely was buried in one of the two empty spots on either side of Martha and Alexander's daughter Tomie, who has a marker. Martha's DC also notes that she was buried here. Hopefully Martha will get a marker in the near future.

According to the 1860 Census of Franklin Twp, Newton County, AR, Martha Adeline Liles was born on May 6, 1861 in Arkansas to Absalom & Cynthia (Colinger) Liles.

Martha married Bird Alexander Stephens at the age of 16 in Newton County, Arkansas on March 28, 1878 and they had eight children:

John Harvey (Wendy) Stephens (1878–1946)
Nancy Ann (Stephens) Brown (1880–1962)
Mary Alline (Stephens) Simmons (1882–1931)
Joseph Carroll Stephens (1884–1961)
Francis Henry Stephens (1888–1942)
Wiley Stephens (1889–____)
Tomie Lee Stephens (1898–1907)
Pearl Stephens (1902–____)

Martha and Bird were living in Bear Creek, Boone County, AR in 1880. It is not known when they moved, but in 1900 they were living in Titus County, TX near the Ripley Community. In 1901, Martha and her daughter Nancy both applied to the Dawes Commission for Indian status but both applications were rejected due to insufficient proof.
