EASTON -- Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Nortonville for the Rev. Arnold Gustav Twenhafel, 78, who died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at his home near Easton. He was pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church near Easton.

He was born July 24, 1923, in Texas, to Gustav William and Frieda Kaspar Twenhafel. He moved in 1935 to Giddings, Texas, where he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Concordia Lutheran Academy in Austin in 1941. He graduated from St. John's College in Winfield and received a Master of Divinity degree in 1947 at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

He established a mission church in Harlingen, Texas, and accepted the pastorate of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Harrold, Texas, in 1949. He was pastor of Berea Lutheran Church in Alton, Ill., from 1954 to 1957, when he became pastor of Bethel Lutheran, an inner-city church on the east side of Detroit, Mich. He received a master's degree in education from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1961.

He was pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Muskegon, Mich., from 1965 to 1972 and later served St. John's Lutheran Church in Victor, Iowa. He was pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Coffeyville from 1977 until 1988, when he retired. He later became pastor of St. John's Lutheran near Easton and served as a chaplain at the Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester.

He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and led a Bible study group at the Hollis Center in Kansas City, Kan.

He married Mildred Gohlke on Aug. 16, 1953, in Littlefield, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Mark Twenhafel, Chicago, Randall Twenhafel, Landstuhl, Germany, and David Twenhafel, Silver Spring, Md.; two daughters, Christine Samms, Overland Park, and Karen Twenhafel Grassi, Colorado Springs; a brother, Marvin Twenhafel, Denver; a sister, Ruth Emmrich, Buda, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Easton. Relatives and friends will meet from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the church near Easton, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the organ fund at St. John's Lutheran Church near Easton. O'Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville is in charge of arrangements.
