William Hugh Behnke, 62, passed away Tuesday, September 1, at his home in Gladstone, following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 24, 1930, in Coldwater, Branch County, the son of Harry and Velma (Raile) Behnke. He was a 1948 graduate of Marshall High School, and received his Master Plumbers License in 1951. He worked with his father at Behnke Plumbing & Heating in Charlotte, until moving to the Bay View location in Escanaba, in 1972, where he established B&B Plumbing & Heating. He was married to the former Catherine Rhodes, on November 2, 1974, and she survives. He was a member of B.P.O. Eagles #354, Plumbers & Pipefitters #506, F.&A.M. of Charlotte, Charlotte Lions Club and JCs, and had been a member of Eaton County Commissioners. He had also been a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and baseball coach with Charlotte Recreation League. Surviving are his wife, Kay, of Gladstone; sons, David Garlow, of Charleston, West Virginia, Timothy Garlow, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, John Garlow II, of Dallas, Texas, William H. Behnke, of Charlotte, and Joseph Garlow, of Escanaba; daughters, Mrs. Rachael Poe and Mrs. James (Judith) MacInness, all of Charlotte, Mrs. Nicholas (Jeri) Andreau and Mrs. Jacalyn Dempsey, all of Round Rock, Texas, and Mrs. Mary Beth Hartline, of Euless, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Roy (Winona) Freiling, of Portage; and 19 grandchildren. Visitation at Boyce Funeral Home, Escanaba, Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Escanaba, with Rev. Richard Hutton officiating. Burial will follow in Fernwood Cemetery, Gladstone.
