He was one of five auto accident victims and was the driver of the vehicle. The accident in which 10 people died occurred near Dunkirk, Maryland and was considered one of the worst ever traffic accidents in the state. The other passengers of the Abell vehicle were his brother, Bryan Abell Jr., Milton E. Stottlemyer, John P. Schweinhaut and Robert Lee Schweinhaut.
