Alice Yancey Birckhead, a long-time resident of the Charlottesville area, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at her home on Lake Monticello. When she passed, she was with her husband and best friend of 58 years.

Born on May 21, 1936, in Greenwood, Virginia, Alice lived a full-life complete with laughter, sorrow and many memories. During this life, her greatest love was always for her family. She spent many years working at the bank; however, she truly devoted herself to caring for her family. Alice enjoyed quiet mornings drinking coffee with her husband on the porch and evenings spent with friends and family gathering in her kitchen for a warm meal.

Alice retired from Sovran Bank after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church and loved spending Sunday mornings at church with her husband and granddaughter. She enjoyed driving into town with her husband to go to the beauty shop; she took pride in her appearance and was the epitome of elegance. Alice was a big supporter of the University of Virginia and spent each fall attending home football games. Even so, her family always came first and she supported them fervently. She was always patient and kind and she cherished the times when she could listen and give advice. She had a life-time of experiences and did her best to guide her family, loving them without fail.

Alice is survived by her husband, Edwin Birckhead; her children, Carolyn Birckhead, Stan and his wife Susan Birckhead, and Stuart Birckhead, and their families; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Alice Birckhead was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered always for her genuine smile, the way her laughter could light up a room, her gentle touch, and her caring and compassionate disposition.

A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2011, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Churchyard in Greenwood.

The family welcomes visitors to stop by and visit with Alice at the funeral home anytime.

"If we live, we live to the Lord and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's." Romans 14:8
