Daughter of Paul & Mabel Keeney Weirich, Sara Hartman graduated in 1948 from Myerstown High School in Pennsylvania. She received an undergraduate degree in history from Ursinis College in 1952 and began her theological studies at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she was one of the first female students enrolled in the religious education degree program. During seminary, she met her future husband and they published the seminary's student newspaper. In 1954, she received her masters degree in religious education.

After eight years of serving parishes jointly with her husband, she was called as the minister of parishes in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Wisconsin. She enjoyed music, cooking, collegiate football and basketball, and major league baseball.

Mrs. Hartman was preceded in death by her parents; and her sons, Eric and Frank Hartman.
