Chief Deputy Warnock was killed in the line of duty by Will Golsen,an escaped convict from Autauga County.Deputy Warnock arrived at a residence with two other deputies W.L. Lowe and J.L. Barker,where Golson was last seen.On Monday November 28,1898 at 3:15 p.m. as the officers surrounded the house,Mr.Warnock walked up on the porch.Will Golson opened the door and fired at Deputy Warnock,striking him several times.Deputy Warnock managed to get off five shots at Golson,but none found their mark.Golson escaped,after a desperate manhunt,he was captured.Will Golson was tried and sentenced to death.He was hanged at the Jefferson County Jail on February 9,1900 and is buried in Red Mountain Cemetery,which is under portions of Lane Park,the Botanical Gardens,and The Birmingham Zoo.
