John, known as J.W. was born Jun 1, 1871 near Platte City. He grew up in Platte County, except for a brief period when his family lived in Leavenworth CO. Kansas. He worked as a farm hand to put himself through the University of South Dakota.. Upon completion of his education, he returned to Platte CO and became a teacher in the country schools, his first school being Hackberry, near Farley. He also taught in the Farley School. On April 19 1899, he married Emma Susan Wallace, daughter of James and Sarah Todd Wallace. They had one child, Wallace J. born Feb 8, 1900, while J.W. was teaching at Farley. In 1900, J.W. who was an ardent democrat successfully ran for the Missouri House of Representatives and was elected. He was reelected in 1902 and 1904, he returned to Platte CO. where he organized the Farley State Bank in 1907. The bank was started with $10000 capital contributed by JW and a group of Farley area residents who believed that a bank was needed in town."
