Dr Robert Shumate, a well known dentist of Beckley, a few days ago, while examining his shot gun, accidentally discharged one barrel of the weapon, the load of shot tearing away all but the shreds of flesh of one foot. Drs Cook & Hume, who were nearby stopped the flow of blood, and amputated the leg about half way between the knee and ankle joint. He is reported as doing as well as conditions will permit.
It is a peculiar coincidence that Elbert Shumate, a brother of Dr Shumate, was killed by an accidental gun shot wound while hunting, about eleven years ago. He was about eighteen years of age at the time of his death, and lived with his parents, at Marshes.
Two years later, George Shumate, the father of Elbert and the doctor, was fatally injured by the bursting of the same gun with which his son had accidentally killed himself, a piece of the metal penetrating his shoulder and ranging downward through his body. He lived about a week after the accident, and was attended by Dr Cook, who is one of the surgeons in charge of the son who is the latest victim of a similar accident in the same family.
