He was assigned for extra duty with the Quartermaster's Department from January 1862 and was promoted to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant of the Regiment on March 13, 1862. Richards was on duty with the Brigade Train at City Point, Va. from Feb. 29, 1864 to June 30, 1864. He was mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.
