Jim was born in Morgan County, Indiana, on October 10, 1921 to the late Albert I. and Edna C. Young. He lived his life in Morgan County and graduated from Paragon High School with the class of 1940.
Shortly after high school, Jim enlisted in the US Army and served his country with valor in the South Pacific during WWII, as well as, during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His loyalty to his country and faith in God guided and protected him through 22 years and 11days of active military service. He retired from the U.S. Army as a 1st Sergeant (E8) on January 31, 1968.
After his military career, Jim began working for the Town of Paragon as a street superintendant throughout the 1970's, 80's and early 90's. On January 18, 1974 he married Anita Kathryn (Bowman) Young and she preceded him in death on December 26, 1998. After the passing of his beloved wife, Jim went back to work at the Martinsville Walmart in the lawn and garden department for the following four years. His life was a testimony of his hardworking, kind and faithful spirit and as a token of appreciation and respect the Town of Paragon erected and named a small park in his honor.
He was a dedicated member of the Paragon Christian Church where he had served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendant over the years. He also held memberships in the Martinsville V.F.W. Post #1257 and the American Legion Post #230. He took pleasure in all sports, Nascar, fishing, gardening and his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his loving family including three sons, Terry (wife, Kathy) Miller of Paragon, Randy (wife, Kathy) Miller of Martinsville and Doug Kinley of South Carolina; two daughters, Georgia Hovious of Paragon and Sue Ellen O'Neal of Spencer; eleven grandchildren; several great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers, Maurice and Ralph Young.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 4-8:00 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. Rev. Steve Adams will conduct a graveside service celebrating Jim's life on Wednesday, October 16th beginning at 11:00 a.m. and he will be laid to rest with military honors in Friendship Park Cemetery, Paragon.
