William was born May 26, 1846, at Knightstown, Henry Co., Indiana. He died Jan. 8, 1928, at Shell Lake, Washburn Co., Wis., aged 81 years, 7 months and 12 days, and was buried there in the local cemetery.

William was united in marriage to Emily P. Prescott in Faribault Co., Minnesota Nov 18, 1868.

W. H. Cantley, aged 84, G. A. R. veteran, and one of the oldest of the village pioneers, passed away at his home here Sunday, Jan. 8th. Funeral services were held from the residence at 2:00 p. m., Wednesday, Jan. 11th. Military rites were observed by the Local Legion Post with local Legionnaires acting as pallbearers and a firing squad of Legionaries offering the salute at the grave followed by the final sounding of taps.

William was on the police force during the early days of the village of Shell Lake. He was the first rural mail carrier for several years. He was sexton of the cemetery for many years and helped organize the Shell Lake cemetery Association. He was the originator of the Shell Lake Dray and Ice lines. He worked until he was no longer able to. After Emily's death, he moved in with his daughter, Mrs. George Bohn Sr.
