Son of Henry Allen Sr., Henry "Harry" Allen's mother Emeline Hill died when he was just a baby. (Bucks County Intelligencer - May 5, 1871, p. 3: "DIED/ In New Britain, on the 2d instant, EMELINE, daughter of Abraham Hill.") He was raised in his grandparents' (Abraham and Ann Eliza "Mary" Hill [Memorial# 170764538]) household. He was very close in age to his "aunt" Ellen Hill, and they later shared Ann's very modest estate when she died. Ann appears to have lost her husband around Sept., 1879, and supported the family as a seamstress.

As an adult Harry was a teamster and later (by 1910) a canal boatman on a portion of the Delaware and Lehigh Canal. That ran from around Easton south to Bristol, Pennsylvania, with barges typically carrying coal. When he was 24 in April of 1894 he married Margaret "Maggie" Short-Van Norman across the Delaware at Frenchtown, Hunterdon County, NJ. They had three sons: Russell Thomas Allen, Lloyd Sherman Allen, and William Mahlon Allen. In 1900 and 1910 they lived in rented homes at New Hope PA. He was involved with his wife and children until about 1915, and a Trenton newspaper mentioned them giving their sons Russell and Lloyd gold watches on their 20th and 18th birthdays respectively.

After that he and Maggie must have had differences. By 1915 she lived with the 3 kids and an unknown Ira White in Trenton, NJ, and in 1920 he is listed living with Ella Walck (Memorial# 16664846 ) along the "tow path" at Mauch Chunk (aka Jim Thorpe) PA. She had two daughters, Lizzie/Betty and Sallie. Many years later when Betty was in her 90s, she recalled that her mother and Harry had a common law relationship, although they were listed as "boarder" and "housekeeper" in the censuses, and she did not remember him fondly. She wrote that he would beat her and her sister for no reason. His granddaughter Margaret Allen did not remember the family having much involvement with him, saying she was told his "girlfriend[s]" would go below deck when the canal barge would get into populated areas.

The 1930 Census showed that his son Russell, who had abandoned his own small family, lived with Harry and Ella, and was employed nearby. The canal stopped operation in the 1930s, and he was said to have been enrolled in WPA "make-work" projects. Harry died in 1936 of bronchio-pneumonia and myocarditis at North Catasauqua PA, with Ella serving as informant on his death certificate.

His aunt Susan (Allen) Holdsworth's death certificate listed her and her brother's father's name as Henry Allen as well. There was a Henry Allen, laborer, evidently living in the 1840s and 50s within a few miles of the Fretz's, who took in this Henry's father as a child.
