Geneva Daily Times, Tuesday, March 25, 1969:
James Locke dies at 70
Canandiagua-- Funeral services for James L. Locke, 70, 59 Catherine St., who died yesterday in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where he was admitted Sunday night, will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Boughton Hill Cemetery, Victor. There will be no calling hours.
Contributions may be made to the building fund of Thompson Memorial Hospital.
Locke was the son of Fred and Mercie Peer Locke. Fred Locke was the inventor of the high voltage insulator and founder of the former Locke Insulator Co. in Victor. In 1925, Locke joined the State Police and served for one year. Beginning in 1933, in his service with the Ontario County Sheriff's Department at Canandaigua, Locke served under three sheriffs.
He had been a special deputy and chief deputy sheriff. He organized the finger printing system for the county under Sheriff Walter E. Elling. Locke served with the department for 24 years. Later, for seven and one half years, he served as chief guard at the Canandaigua VA Hospital.
Locke attended seminars for law enforcement officers at Hobart College and the FBI schools. He was a member of the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Association, and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a charter member of the BPOE, and a member of the Milnor Lodge, F&AM of Victor.
Surviving are his widow, Sybil Griffith Locke, R.N.; two daughters, Mrs. Melvin Kimble and Mrs. William Emerson, and one brother, Morton F. Locke, all of Canandaigua; six grandchildren.
