Joseph was a Wilmington ironmonger and Councilman (1810- 1826) who operated one of the first hardware stores in the city. In 1809, he was an organizer of the Wilmington Turnpike Company that built what is now known as the Lancaster Turnpike. The next year, he was elected a director of the National Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine and in 1813 was a founder and the first treasurer of the Wilmington and Philadelphia Turnpike. In 1825, he was an organizer and director of the Delaware Fire Insurance Company. Joseph also served on the council of water works, known as the Spring Water Company.

In 1802, he married Hester Spackman, daughter of George Spackman and Thomazene Downing Bond. They had eight children. Their home at 306 Market Street, Wilmington remained in the family until 1946.
