Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was elected to represent Virginia's 11th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1857 to 1861. Also served as a Representative from Virginia in the Confederate Congress in 1862. Served as a General in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Cloyd Mountain, near Dublin, Virginia, and died on May 21, 1864.
