After training in Pendleton, Oregon, Jim was stationed in England where he served in the Eighth Air Force, providing maintenance for the United States B-17 Flying Fortresses.
During that time, Leola was also stationed in England as an Army nurse. They married in Chard, England on November 28, 1944.
Following the War, they began a family and lived in California and Oregon before purchasing a farm near Castleford, Idaho, in 1951.
Jim and Leola raised five children and hosted many more grandchildren (19) and great-grandchildren. Jim enjoyed collecting and fixing watches and he also enjoyed tinkering with his steam engine tractors. He was a master storyteller-- at the end of the day as the family gathered around the table in the kitchen, Jim would start telling stories and it wouldn't take long for everyone to be laughing. Jim farmed in Castleford until the day he died.
