James was born in Shannon County, Missouri. To his parents and sisters and his Missouri relations he was known as "Wallace" but to most of friends he was "Jim." He attended school in Eminence, Missouri. During WW2 he joined the Army Air Force. Prior to being deployed he met Leola Norris on a troop train; he was headed to training in Pendleton, Oregon and she was traveling home to Idaho after finishing nursing training in Minnesota. When Jim reached his destination he called his mother and told her that he had met the girl he was going to marry.

After training in Pendleton, Oregon, Jim was stationed in England where he served in the Eighth Air Force, providing maintenance for the United States B-17 Flying Fortresses.

During that time, Leola was also stationed in England as an Army nurse. They married in Chard, England on November 28, 1944.

Following the War, they began a family and lived in California and Oregon before purchasing a farm near Castleford, Idaho, in 1951.

Jim and Leola raised five children and hosted many more grandchildren (19) and great-grandchildren. Jim enjoyed collecting and fixing watches and he also enjoyed tinkering with his steam engine tractors. He was a master storyteller-- at the end of the day as the family gathered around the table in the kitchen, Jim would start telling stories and it wouldn't take long for everyone to be laughing. Jim farmed in Castleford until the day he died.

James is the father of:
James W. Deatherage
Carol Deatherage Wilson
Judy Deatherage Stewart Watkins
Don A. Deatherage
John T. Deatherage

Memorial maintained by James' granddaughter.
