A., Port Royal, SC, "Dear Benham, Don't forget the prisoner on board the [USS] "Cahawba." His name is Henry G. Lungren, M. D., Asst. Surg., P.A.C.S., and a resident of Florida. You know I told you that it was my intention to send him home on parole; but that in consequence of a circumstance which
recently transpired, I think it unsafe to do so until after the fall of P. Yours truly, T. W. Sherman, B. G., U. S. A." [Note: Pensacola, Florida, which was occupied at the time by Confederate forces was evacuated on May 9th and was occupied by United States forces on May 10th, 1862.
04/14/1862 - In a letter written to Capt. L. H. Pelouzi, Acting Inspector General, Port Royal, SC, from the Provost Marshal's Office, "Capt. L. H. Pelouze, Dear Sir, The Provost Marshal has just recd. an order to send north all the prisoners of war and political prisoners in his keeping. Will you please be so kind as to enquire of Genl. Hunter whether I am included. I am very desirous that I may be released on parole to see my family, the peculiar circumstances under which I left them you have heard from me. I should indeed be very grateful to you if you would intercede with the Genl. on my
behalf. Can you not call and see me. I assure you I would be gratified if you would call. Yours very respectfully, Henry G. Lungren, M.D., Asst Surg. P. A. C. S."
