Hercules Byrum, 89, of 196 Black Mingle Road, Gates, died Friday, April 30, in his home. Mr. Byrum was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Tom and Belle Dail Byrum. A retired farmer, he was known throughout the area as a master wood craftsman and carpenter and was an avid fisherman. He was a member and deacon of Middle Swamp Baptist Church and its Adult Men's Sunday school class. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by both his wives, Katherine Godfrey Byrum and Gracie Bundy Howell Byrum; a sister, Viola Goodwin; brothers, Tommy and Britton Byrum; and his stepson, R.A. Howell. Surviving are three daughters, Emerald Thessin of Hertford, Faye Allen of Yorktown, Va., and Kaye Councill of Gates; two sons, L.H. Byrum and wife Pat, of Suffolk, Va., and Wayne Byrum and wife, Kaye, of Gates; sisters, Irene Broughton of Hertford and Annie Belle Byrum of Tyner; and a brother, Paul Byrum of Carrollton, Va. Also surviving are Gracie's daughters, Joan Russell and husband, Frank, of Sunbury, Rita Lane and husband, Roger, and Dette Buck and husband, Joe, all of Gates. Additionally the blended families shared 25 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Middle Swamp Baptist Church by the Revs. Burt Pearce and Joe Buck. Burial followed in Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Tyner.
