OBITUARY
Dorothy Irene Kramer, the fifth child of Elma Verda Rock Kramer and Daniel Kramer, was born July 27, 1916, south of Bird City, Kan., in a sod house.

She died October 31, 2007 in Hays, Kan., at the age of 91.

She was 5 and one-half years old when her mother died. Two weeks after her mother's death, the roof blew off the house and the children stayed in different homes until another home could be built. Pauline, John and Kenneth stayed with Aunt Mabel Wolf, Dorothy with Uncle George Rock, Dave with Grandmother Nordurft and Gale stayed with Dad. In the fall, they returned home, where they enjoyed their time spent together for a few more years.

Her dad married Flossie Melstrom who had two daughters and three sons (Alice Pearl Melstrom 1914, Leo Rex Melstrom 1915, Joseph Benjamin Melstrom 1918, Vera Mae Melstrom 1920 and Glenn Everett Melstrom 1921 - 1998) from a previous marriage. Together they had three children, Lloyd, Lowell and Mary Lou.

In 1938 Dorothy married Frank Headrick. He had three daughters from a previous marriage, Anna, Frances and Eilene. To this union were born four daughters, Verda, Valyne, Sharon and Sona. Frank died in 1954.

Though she struggled to raise her daughters alone, she provided them with a strong support system by bringing them up knowing the Lord, teahing them a wealth of valuable knowledge and improving themselves through 4-H, church and school activities.

Dorothy operated the cafe in McDonald where she served many delicious meals. She was passionate about baking and cooking for others and spent many hours preparing meals in anticipation of holiday gatherings with family.

Wanting to better the lives of her children and herself, she returned to school and proudly earned her GED in 1973. She worked at Prairie Development Center in Atwood for eight years, positively impacting the lives of many women through her daily encouragement and endless patience.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling and spending precious time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. They treasured these moments as much as she did and will miss her tremendously.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sister; daughter, Valyne; grandson, Mark Krannawitter; and great-great-granddaughter, Tesla McLaughlin.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters and spouses, Verda and Stan Wancura of Colby, Kan., Sharon and Jack Doggett of Independence Mo., and Sona and Larry Gray of Grand Rapids, Mich.; half-brothers Lloyd and Lowell Kramer; half-sister, Mary Lou Grammer; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

A special memorial service was held Nov. 5 in St Francis at Knodel Funeral Home, with her family members conducting the service. Her burial was at Bird City Cemetery.

Because she accepted the Lord at a young age, she spends her days in glorious heaven with others gone before her. Her words to live by were "The Lord will guide and direct your paths. Always acknowledge Him for your Blessings."
