Police in the Bay Area on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of slaying her ex-best friend, Michelle Le, formerly of San Diego, a nursing student who disappeared from a Hayward hospital in May.

The arrest of Giselle Esteban at her Union City home was announced by Hayward police at a news conference attended by Le's parents, brother and a cousin.

Evidence against Esteban included one of her shoes dabbed with Le's blood and security video showing Esteban at the hospital before and after Le's disappearance, said Hayward police Lt. Roger Keener.

Le's body has never been found. Keener said it would be up to Alameda County prosecutors and Le's family whether to offer Esteban any deal in exchange for revealing the location of Le's remains.

"We will not consider this investigation complete until Michelle is found," Keener said.

Le's brother Michael, told reporters that Esteban "shouldn't drag this out any longer than it has to be. No one should live with a loved one missing. We just want to have her home."

Le grew up in Rancho Penasquitos and attended Mt. Carmel High School with Esteban. After Le's mother died in 1999, her father, Son Le, moved the family to his sister's home in Mira Mesa. Le graduated in 2002 and later enrolled in nursing school at Samuel Meritt University in Oakland. She would have completed her nursing certificate in six months.

Her colleagues at Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center, where she was training, last saw her about 7 p.m. on May 27 when she said she was going to get something from her car. She took her keys and cellphone, and never returned to finish her shift. An instructor reported her missing.

Keener said police that night launched the first of many searches for Le. The next day they found her abandoned car about half a mile from the hospital. There were blood stains inside, and investigators classified the case as a homicide.

Cell phone records showed that Le's and Esteban's cell phones travelled similar paths from the hospital to different areas of Alameda County, Keener said.

Esteban's home was searched on May 29 and a shoe with blood on the bottom was seized. Various pieces of evidence were sent to the FBI's lab in Quantico, Virginia. Esteban became a person of interest in the case.

"We have no evidence, there's been nothing in this investigation that supports anyone else involved in Michelle's disappearance" other than Esteban motive" in Le's slaying.

According to court documents in San Diego, Esteban has been involved in a prolonged custody battle with the father of her 5-year-old-daughter. The parent had a tumultuous relationship marked by some instances of physical violence, and each on accused the other of having problems with anger management.

At the new conference, Le's cousin, Krystine Dinh, thanked all the volunteers that helped family search for Le over the past 12 weeks. She said another search is scheduled for Sept. 16.

"We want to emphasize that this isn't over until Michells's home," Dinh said.

HAYWARD, Calif. - Officials have determined that the body found over the weekend (Saturday) in a California canyon are thoses of Michelle Le, the missing nursing student who disappeared in May while taking a school break.

Police suspect Le's former friend Giselle Esteban, 27, of Union City, attacked Le in the parking garage of the hospital where she was doing a clinical rotation. Esteban knew Le in high school in San Diego and was arrested earlier this month and charged with murder.

Esteban told KGO-TV in June that she hated Le because Le was friends with Scott Marasigan, of Fremont, the father of Estaban's 5-year-old daughter. But she denied having anything to do with Le's disappearance.

In May at the time of Le's disappearance, Le was working on a bachelor's degree program at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, combining classroom work with clinical training.

University spokeswoman Elizabeth Valente has described Le as "a ray of sunshine" with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for nursing. Le was well liked on campus, Valente said.

Her family said she decided to go into nursing because she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her mother.

Le family spokeswoman Krystine Dinh said in an email on Monday that grieving loved ones are preparing "a proper goodbye" for Le. Dinh also thanked police and those who helped search for Le.
