Only daughter of famed Black educator Booker T. Washington and Fanny (Smith) Washington. She was the first child born on the campus of Tuskegee (Ala.) Institute, which her father founded . From Wellesley (Mass.) College, she followed her love of music to the University of Berlin in Germany where she studied under a student of Franz Liszt. For 25 years she directed the Tuskegee choir and taught music in her home. One of her students was Dorothy James, wife of General Chappie James.
