from the Edna (KS) Sun, December 13, 1923:
"Death of a Pioneer Mother - had lived in and near Edna for nearly 60 years
Susan Froman was born in Spencer County, Kentucky, Sept. 22, 1841, and departed this life at her late home in Edna Kansas, on Wednesday Dec. 5, 1923, aged 82 years, 2 months, and 13 days. At the age of 25 years, she professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist Church at Taylorsville, Kentucky, since which time she has lived a faithful christian life. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Baptist Church of Edna, Kansas. She was united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1876, to John Hughes who, after a devoted companionship of 56 years, passed to the better world on June 10, 1923. To this union were born two children, a son and daughter, both of whom has preceded them into the world beyond. With her family, she emigrated to Kansas in Sept. 1874, and has lived in and near Edna ever since. Those left to mourn her departure are four grandchildren, John W. Goodwin, Mrs. E.F. Hayes, A.W. Goodwin, and Susie M. Goodwin, also one great granddaughter, Margaret Ellen Hayes, a number of relatives, and a host of friends. The funeral took place from the Baptist Church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Rev. J.N. Varnell preaching the funeral discourse. There was a profusion of flowers, and the large attendance was in evidence of the high esteem in which this pioneer mother was held. Interment in the North Edna Cemetery following the services at the church."
