LUTHER MARTIN FOUND DEAD NEAR RAILROAD TRACK
Chisholm Says He Must Have Been Hit By Train Last Night
The body of a Sheffield man was found this morning at about 6:30 near the crossing of the L and N railroad on the old South Court street, Florence.
Identification showed that the man was Luther D. Martin, of 2502 12th Street, Sheffield. W.R. Chisholm, Jr, Lauderdale County coroner, said that it is surmised that he was hit by a switch engine coming from Sheffield to Florence at midnight last night, as he had been dead about six hours.
The body was discovered by Harry Bridges, and employee of Pressure Concrete Company, Florence, as he was on his way to work. Martin was lying about 20 feet from the South-East side of the track.
Mr. Chisholm declared the death accidental, stating that he had not been run over, but that he had received severe injuries on the right side, with his shoulder and head crushed. He stated further that the engine showed no signs of having hit a person, but that the engineer, J. W. Perkeson, Nashville, has not been contacted yet.
The dead man was last seen at about 5:30 pm Thursday by Oscar Fields who was with him, according to Chisholm.
Fields was arrested by Florence police for public drunkenness just after leaving Martin on S. Cherry Street, Florence, he said.
Funeral arrangements will be announded by Spry of Sheffield.
