BERLIN — Retired Gunnery Sgt. Carl B. Clifford, 86, with 20 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, passed away peacefully Wednesday Aug. 31, 2011, at his home in Berlin. Carl was born on Aug. 25, 1925, in Willard, Ohio, the son of the late William and Julia (Brown) Clifford.
He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. He was also a Boy Scout from the age of 12, and following graduation from college, he joined the Boy Scouts of America in Warren, Ohio. While with the Boy Scouts of America he earned the Silver Beaver Award, a council-level distinguished service award for a registered adult leader. Carl worked 31 years as a teacher with the Newton Falls School Board of Education. In addition to teaching, he was passionate as a track and field coach, girl's basketball coach, seventh-grade football coach and assistant coach for varsity football.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sylvia S. Clifford of Berlin; four siblings, Raymond Clifford and his wife, Betty, of Fayetteville, N.C., Shirley McCartney of Parker, Colo., Kathleen Barron of Pleasant City, Ohio, Marge Long and life partner, Don Hayes, of Pleasant City; a son, Kevin Clifford and his wife, Laurie, of Columbiana, Ohio; a daughter, Janet Clifford Quick and her husband, James, of Berlin; seven grandchildren, Ken Krisher of Hailey, Idaho, Rich Krisher and his wife, Jennifer, of Lewiston, Idaho, Rob Krisher of Vancouver, Wash., Hattie Quick and her husband, Peter Shipley, of Baltimore, Samantha Mayhew of Columbiana, and Mitchell and Gabriel Clifford of Columbiana. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren Logan and Kendall Krisher of Lewiston.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Robert and Harold Clifford, and his daughter, Patricia Clifford Krisher, preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Carl will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at 10175 Rawiga Road in Rittman, Ohio, on Thursday at 2 p.m., and he will be buried with full military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps.
