MAXWELL MAN IS FIRST TRAFFIC FATALITY OF 1978

A member of a pioneer Maxwell area family became the first fatality of 1978 in Colusa County early Sunday morning when he was run over by another car while trying to get his own car out of a ditch in which it was stuck in the mud.

Claude Arthur Buchanan, Sr., 81, a lifelong resident of Maxwell, died soon after admission to Eskaton Colusa Healthcare Center of injuries suffered.

Buchanan was born September 18, 1896 in Colusa County and had resided all his life in the Maxwell area where he engaged in farming. He was a member of a pioneer Maxwell family.

Buchanan was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of the American Legion, Independent Order of God Fellows and the Glenn-Colusa Cattleman's Association.

He is survived by his son, Claude Buchanan, Jr. of Williams; four grandchildren, Claudia Daniels of Pennsylvania and Lindia Miller, Jim and Margaret Buchanan, all of Williams; three brothers, Hudson L. Buchanan of Maxwell; Herbert Buchanan of Bakersfield and Clyde R. Buchanan of Yucca Valley and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the McNary-Moore Chapel, with interment to follow in the Maxwell Cemetery.
