U.S. Congressman. Pursuing academics in the medical field, he studied medicine and practiced in Cedarville, New Jersey. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the US Continental Army as a regimental Surgeon. After the war, he practiced medicine in Bridgeton, New Jersey, (1783-89) and was a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly, (1789-95). In 1801, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Congresses, serving until 1807. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New Jersey State Council in 1807 and was vice president for the collector of customs of Bridgeton, (1808-12). During the War of 1812, he was Adjutant General of the New Jersey Militia and Brigadier General of the Cumberland Brigade. After the war, he was vice president of Burlington College, (1822-32) and was again vice president for the collector of customs of Bridgeton, from 1822, until he retired from public service in 1832.
