Taylor Sykes Dies Following Stroke
Taylor Sykes, a resident of Fort Benton since 1938 and engaged in business in this city all during that time, passed away at 4:15 p.m. at the St. Clare hospital on Sunday, Aug. 14th. He had only been sick for the past two weeks, suffering a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied.
Taylor Sykes was born Feb. 11, 1895, at Sims, North Dakota, where he spent his early life. In 1915 he went to Saskatchewan, Canada, where he took up a homestead. On Dec. 19, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Marie E. Dorcas, and they resided there until 1928 when they moved to Sunburst, Mont., and in 1934 to Chester, where he was engaged in the meat business. They moved to this city in 1938. Mr. Sykes took over the management of the late Roy Gallagher meat market for some months and then worked for five years for the Safeway meat market in this city. In March 1945, Mr. Sykes and Mrs. Faye Archer planned and started the erection of the present Fort Benton Locker and Market. Mr. Sykes purchasing the interest of Mrs. Archer in Feb. 1949. He later sold an interest in the business to Edward Nottingham and Clair Sykes, the latter selling his interest a year or more ago. Mr. Sykes has been in business here over the past 22 years and was well known throughout Chouteau county. He was always of cheerful and lively disposition and enjoyed visiting with his friends and customers.
Mr. Sykes served in the Canadian army during World War I in 1917 and 1918. He was a member of the Benton Lodge No. 59, I. O. O. F.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Clair Sykes of Billings, and Edgar Sykes of Great Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Nottingham and Mrs. Opal Semenza, of this city; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Tom Sykes, of Marcola, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Baker of Moose Jaw, Canada; and other relatives and a host of friends who will mourn his passing. One son, Flight Officer Leonard T. Sykes, was killed in World War II while serving with the Canadian Air Force. He tried to enlist here but not being a United States citizen he was unable to and went to Canada and joined there.
Funeral services will be held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev. George Ritchey, pastor of the Methodist church, and assisted by members of Benton Lodge No. 59, Odd Fellows.
