Son of William H. and Mary Matilda (Lowery) Canant. He learned Sacred Harp music at an early age. In 1940 he moved to Birmingham AL where he was a steelworker and singing school teacher. He wrote the Sacred Harp tune "Parting Friends" which was included in the 1960 "Sacred Harp" appendix.
