U.S. Senator. During World War I, he served overseas in the U.S. Army. After the war, he graduated from Temple University Law School, in 1922, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Woodbury, New Jersey. He was Gloucester County Supervisor, (1929-34), Woodbury City Solicitor, in 1931 and a New Jersey State Senator, (1934-40). He also was a member of board of managers, Council of State Governments, (1940-41) and vice chairman of Commission on Delaware River Basin, (1936-43). During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel with the American Military Government in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. In 1948, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1955. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed Ambassador to New Zealand by President Dwight Eisenhower, serving (1955-56). Retiring from politics, he practiced law until his death.
