When Alfred left his parents’ home he worked as a farm-hand at different places in Småland. In Stockholm he worked as a mason for a couple of years.
The same year as his son Bror was born, in 1887, he got employed as a cement worker at the firm Skånska cementgjuteriet (today known as Skanska). This was the same year as the company was founded. In the beginning it manufactured concrete products. Rather soon it became a building company and as early as 1897 its first international business was established.
Alfred became a supervisor in the firm in 1911. He was responsible for building projects at among other places S:t Petersburg in Russia. He also worked in the Ukraine and in Liverpool, England.
