U.S. Congressman. He attended Phillips Academy New Hampshire, Harvard University, was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society of London and explored the territory in the vicinity of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. Entering politics, he was delegate to the New York State Republican convention at Saratoga, in 1896 and was a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1897. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Captain assistant adjutant general of Volunteers, ordnance officer of the Cavalry Division, 5th Army Corps and participated in the Battle of Santiago. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving (1899-1901). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a traveler, author, explorer and moved to Europe in 1920, where resided until his death at age 66.
