John J. Moyer

Services for John J. Moyer, of 1604 Market St. Ashland, who was killed in an accident at the Kocher Coal Mine, Tower City, Tuesday March 11, 1977 will be held at 9:30 a.m. from the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary T. Moyer, 246 Locust Ave. Centralia. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church, Centralia. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Moyer was the son of Mrs. Mary (Tighe) Moyer and the late George Moyer. He was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Ignatius Church.

Surviving in addition to to his mother, are two daughters, Donna and Patricia, both of Centralia; one brother Joseph, of Centralia; nieces and nephews. The McDonald Funeral Home, Girardville has charge of arrangements.

The Porter Tunnel Mine Disaster occurred on March 1, 1977 near Tower City, Schuylkill, Pa. He was one of nine miners who did not survive a rush of water from other unmarked abandoned workings. Death probably instant and his recovery from the mine was March 28th. The last two miners bodies were brought to the surface on March 30th. Forty miners escaped initially, one was trapped underground and was rescued six days later.
