NATCHEZ — Services for Agnes Goodfellow Bowie, 87, of Natchez, who died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary Basilica with the Rev. David Conner officiating. Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery in the Bowie family plot under the direction of the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time.
Mrs. Bowie was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Plaquemine, Saint Martin Parish, La., the daughter of David Warren Goodfellow and Mary Elizabeth Snyder Goodfellow.
Bowie later moved with her family to Waterproof, La., where she graduated from Waterproof High School. She attended nursing school in Shreveport, La., along with her older sister, Mildred, and later graduated from the Natchez Sanatorium as a registered nurse. One of four nurses in her family, she worked at many local hospitals including the Natchez Sanatorium, Natchez Charity Hospital, Natchez General Hospital and Jefferson Davis Hospital — now Natchez Regional Medical Center. She also worked at Tracehaven and Glenburnie nursing homes. She was a very special and compassionate nurse and is best remembered for her private duty care of critically ill and terminal patients.
Mrs. Bowie was a long-time member of St. Mary Basilica. She assisted with many activities at Cathedral School and led a troop of Brownie Scouts. Her family and close friends will remember her for her thoughtfulness, her warmth and compassion for others and for her special sense of humor. She was funny without realizing she was being funny. She brightened the days of all those near and dear to her. Even in her recent illness and hospitalization, the nursing staff commented on her sweet and cooperative nature.
She was preceded by her husband of 47 years, Hugh Crossgrove Bowie; her parents; two brothers, David, who died in infancy and Carl Raymond Goodfellow, who died in Vietnam; sister and fellow nurse, Bertha Arnold and husband Dozier of Douglasville, Ga., sister Davelyn Taylor of Natchez who died earlier this year; three brothers-in-laws, Bill Ricketts, Carroll Taylor of Evansville, Ind., Hollis Wallace Sr. of Waterproof, La.; and nephews Charles Taylor, Allen Taylor and niece Anne Taylor, all of Colorado.
Survivors include her daughter and only child, Mary Elizabeth and son-in-law Paul Dawes of Natchez; four grandchildren, Joseph Bowie Drews of Mobile, Ala., Pamela Dawes Eddy and husband Joe, of Cabot, Ark.; and great-grandchildren Jordan Eddy and Shelby Eddy of Cabot; also included as part of her immediate family are Judy Elizabeth Day and Katherine Felter and husband, Dewitt, and children Jack, Lillie and Riley; one brother, Harry Goodfellow and wife Fanita of St. Francisville, La.; four sisters, Midred Ricketts, fellow nurse June West and husband Mark of Meadville, Elizabeth "Sis" Wallace of Natchez and Billie Jeanne McLeod and husband Wayne of Natchez; many nieces and nephews, Linda Jones of Austell, Ga., Bonnie Porter and husband Butch, Vicki Van Buren and husband Edward, Mike Arnold and wife Carey, Margaret Ann Bobbett and husband Raymond of Bowling Green, Ky., the Rev. She is also survived by several very special and lifelong friends and neighbors, Peggy Calhoun, Mary and Bobby Barrett, Skeeter Wilson, Edith Piazza, Viola Bennett, Mary Estelle and Sonny Sanguinetti, Billie Marie Shaw and C.P. and Marguerite Wallace.
The entire family and many friends have been a wonderful source of love and support during Mrs. Bowie's illness and hospitalizations, demonstrated by many visits, calls, cards and prayers.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Bowie Drews, Hollis Wallace Jr., Conrad Anderson Jr. Danny McLeod, Kameron Berryhill, Lamar Goodfellow and John Hughes. Honorary pallbearers include Tommy McLeod and Bill McNeill.
