JOSEPH RITTEN DEAD
One of Douglas County's Old-
est Citizens Crosses the
Silent River.
Mr. Joseph Ritten, of Belle River, died in this village where he had been brought for medical treatment, at 5 o'clock yesterday morning, aged 51 years. For the past two weeks deceased has been confined to the sick room and death resulted from ulceration of the stomach. Drs. Gilkinson, of Osakis, and Lewis, of Sauk Centre, were in attendance. Mr. Ritten was numbered among this county's pioneers, locating in the town of Belle River in 1870. He has prospered here and accumulated considerable property. He was a man well thought of by his neighbors and acquaintances and until within the past year was postmaster at the River, which office he held for six years. In 1893 he married his second wife, Mrs. Amelia Fegon, of Melrose, from whom he has a son about four weeks old. Deceased had 11 children from his first wife, four boys and seven girls, all of whom are living. A few hours before his death Mr. Ritten signified his desire to make a will, and Mr. J. M. Madison was called in and drew up the document, when the sick man concluded that before signing it he wanted to consult his sons, and did not live to affix his signature. The remains will be taken to his home in Belle River, and funeral services will be held from the Catholic church.
