Cortland Standard – April 7, 1910
Virgil, State Road, April 9 - Mrs. Henrietta Champlin Oaks died April 5, 1910, of pneumonia, aged 67 years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. D. Lang, after an illness of one week. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Eva Terpening and Mrs. Etta Lang, three grandsons and two granddaughters, besides one brother, Elmer Champlin of Minnesota, one sister, Mrs. Libbie Bangs of Groton. Since the death of her husband, Aug 31, 1895, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lang. The funeral was held Thursday at 1:30 p. m. April 7, at the home. A large concourse of relatives and friends were present to pay their last respects to one who was so worthy of their love and esteem. A profusion of flowers covered the casket and banked the room, brought by neighbors and friends as a tribute of love to one who has "only gone before" and whom we trust is asleep in the arms of Jesus. Rev. A. S. Anderson spoke words of comfort from the 4th verse of the 23d Psalm. Two beautiful duets were rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. We can only add from personal knowledge that no more devoted mother, grandmother and friend could be found than Mrs. Oaks. Those from out of town were Cornelius Brogden, Ed Brogden, Frank Bingham, and daughter, Essie of Summerhill; Carl Brogden, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Oaks, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burhans, Mrs. Mariette Pomeroy, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis C. Chrisman, Orlie Terpening, Riley Lang and sisters, Ruie and Lillian of Cortland, Mrs. Nancy Coats of McLean, Amy Keene of Groton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lang, Mr. and Mrs. James Kells of Harford, Geo. Chrisman of Centre Lisle. Those who acted as bearers were Harley Wood, Myron Hammond, Eugene Ryan, and Edwin V. Price.
