US Congressman. He graduated from Union Academy in 1864, moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1866 and taught school. He was principal of a Buffalo public school for three years and established himself as a wholesale woolen merchant. Moving to New York City, in 1877, he engaged in business as a woolen importer, was president of the board of aldermen of New York City, plus was trustee and director of several banks and corporations. In 1907, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth, Sixty-first and Sixty-second Congresses, serving until 1913. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 75.
