U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union College in 1803, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1807 and commenced to practice law in Ballston Spa, New York. He organized the Ballston Center Academy, was justice of the peace in 1808 and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1812-13). In 1813, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress and reelected to the next four succeeding Congresses, elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, reelected as an Adams to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, and elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. After leaving Congress, he resumed his law practice, was a member of the New York State Senate (1840-41), and moved to Ohio in 1843. He lived there in retirement until his death from a paralytic stroke.
