Emily Carolyn Battershell Dial, 86, passed away on September 8, 2011 peacefully at her home in East Millcreek, UT surrounded by her three daughters.

Emily was born to Mary Christmas Arrowsmith and Earl Ridenour Battershell on January 10, 1925 in Hicksville, OH. She married Lindell Lebron Dial in 1947. They later divorced.

Emily is survived by her daughters Linda (Terry) Byers of Lyman, WY, Diane Wolverton of Laramie, WY, Suzanne Iovino of Salt Lake City; grandchildren Nikki (Mark) Ochoa of Woodland, CA, Brandi Newman of St. George, UT; Tony Iovino of Salt Lake City; three great-grandchildren Annette Nicole, Tyler Mark, and Abbigail Carolynn Ochoa of Woodland, CA; sister Alice (John) Loevenguth of Whittier, CA; and longtime friend Col. Clyde F. Gillette of Salt Lake City.

Emily attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL. She was a lifelong artist and graduated from the Academy of Art in Chicago, IL in 1947. She invented and patented the unique art form, Prismatec.

She loved all types of animals and devoted her life to the protection and care of them. In 1991, she founded the Pet Samaritan Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping abandoned, homeless, injured, and abused animals.

Emily received many accolades and awards for her work in animal welfare and in 2004, the Pet Samaritan Fund was recognized by No More Homeless Pets In Utah as Non-Profit Animal Organization of the Year.

Emily also had a passion for butterflies and in 1976 became co-founder of the Utah Lepidopterists' Society in Salt Lake City, UT, with Col. Clyde F. Gillette.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011 in All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Drive, Salt Lake City. A viewing will be at the church one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City.
Friends and family are invited to an open house that will follow the services at 3802 South Sunnydale Drive, East Millcreek.
