In 1894 John and Margaret moved to Crosby County, Texas where they lived with Tom Franklin, Margaret's uncle, through the winter. The Witts then moved to Emma, Texas and kept the Witt Hotel for some years. Also in Emma, John Witt and Joseph Jefferson Spikes owned the Witt and Spikes General Merchandise. About 1905 the Witts sold out and moved to Hereford, Texas and after about two years living in Hereford, they moved to a claim near Portales, New Mexico. In 1915 they moved again to Lubbock and farmed south of town. John Witt passed away after moving to Lubbock where Margaret had an apartment house.
