Ellen Annette (“Bessie”) was born at Vinland, outside Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in December 1849. Bessie married Jacob P. Haber in Winnebago County on August 5, 1880. He was, at one time, superintendent of schools at Ripon, Wisconsin, and then was president of P.B. Haber Printing in Fond du Lac. For a time the Habers lived at Mayville, North Dakota, where Jacob took a job as cashier at the First National Bank, but they eventually left for Jennings, Louisiana. On January 29, 1908, the Habers decided to take a drive. Along the way, Bessie was struck by a stray bullet. She died later that day. The 58-year-old’s body was returned by rail to Wisconsin for burial at Brooks Cemetery.

"Death of Mrs. Haber - Resident of Jennings, La., Well-Known in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac, Is Victim of a Stray Bullet While Out Riding - Remains Will Be Brought Here for Interment, Arriving Saturday. Friends in this city have received the announcement of the tragic death at Jennings, La., of Mrs. Bessie Haber, wife of Jacob P. Haber, who died Wednesday from a wound received from a stray bullet. The detailed information regarding the tragedy has not been received. A telegram this morning gave the brief statement: 'Mrs. J.P. Haber wounded by stray bullet while driving Wednesday afternoon and died soon after. Mr. Haber leaves with the remains at noon Thursday. Burial at Brooks' Cemetery at Oshkosh.' Mrs. Haber's husband is a brother of P.B. Haber of Fond du Lac, who is publisher of The Fond du Lac Commonwealth, a daily newspaper, and Mrs. Haber is a sister of Miss De Ette Quatermass of this city, who was visiting her sister this winter. The announcement comes to friends here and at Fond du Lac as a severe shock, as she was well known in both cities, having visited frequently in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac since moving away from Wisconsin. Mrs. Haber was born in the town of Vinland, in Winnebago county, and was a sister of the late W.W. Quatermass, ex-disdrict attorney of Winnebago county. She is survived by her husband, who is president of the P.B. Haber Printing company of Fond du Lac, and by one sister, Miss De Ette Quatermass, whose home was in this city until the death of her mother last summer, since which time she has been spending the winter at the Haber home at Jennings, La. The husband of the deceased was for a number of years superintendent and principal of the Ripon schools. From there the family moved to Mayville, N.D. going to Jennings about ten years ago. Mrs. Haber was a woman of splendid christian character and was very highly esteemed. It is expected that the remains will arrive here next Saturday noon and in the meantime arrangements for the funeral will be determined upon. Interment will be at Brooks' cemetery five miles north of the city."
