Signe was an elementary school teacher at Persnäs on the island of Öland in Sweden, until she left in 1893 to join her father Carl Hallberg in Middle Haddam, CT. When she left her teaching job, she received the following letter of recommendation:

"Elementary School Teacher, Signe Perolina Hallberg, due to an extended trip to North America, has requested the School Council to accept her resignation as of upcoming 13 November; this resignation has been accepted.
She has for the past three years held this position with skill, zeal, and has earnestly instructed and maintained discipline, and her conduct has remained dignified and honorable, whereas the School Council herewith certifies that she can be highly recommended.

Persnäs, Kalmar Province, Parish Registrar's Office, the 10th day of February 1893 (ninety-three). On behalf of the School Council of Persnas Parish. Gustaf Håkansson, Rector of Persnäs Parish".

In Connecticut she met and eventually married her first cousin Godfrey Halberg. They had a son Olaf Lewis before Signe died of tuberculosis.

Signe is in the same grave as her first cousin Agnes Brolin.
