She was born on June 25, 1919, in Hancock to the late William and Mabel (James) Schaaf, attending local schools. She was married first to Martin Hesse and later to Delbert Hixson with both preceding her in death.
She lived much of her life in Tamarack City and also lived for a time at Lake View Manor in Hancock before residing at the Medical Care Facility.
Evelyn was a faithful member of Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Houghton and its Dorcas Society. She especially enjoyed spending time with family, knitting and crocheting, playing various card games and board games, and watching sports games. She had a great sense of humor.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Jack, Ray, Don and Ron; and sisters, Beatrice, Myrtle, Ethel, Eleanore and Helen.
She is survived by four daughters, Rose Phelan of Brownstone, Mich., Carol (Richard) Varano of Florida, Gloria Flecker of Idaho and Marjorie (Jerry) LaChapelle of Idaho; a son, Bill Hixson of Texas; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Gordon Schaaf of Hancock and Bernie (Phyllis) Schaaf of Montana; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Lutherna Church with Rev. David Weber to officiate. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Lake Linden.
