NOBLE, Okla. — Thomas Frailey Swopes, 87, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Chapel Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Banner Cemetery in Lexington by Memorial Chapel Funeral Service of Noble.

Mr. Swopes was born April 6, 1924, in Elk City to Thomas Edwin and Mabel Elizabeth Selby Swopes. He moved to Noble in 1978, from Norman. He attended Reydon High School and Southwestern State College, receiving a bachelor's and a master's degree in industrial arts and math.

Mr. Swopes became a schoolteacher and taught many places before his retirement. During teaching he also worked part time for the postal service and upon his teaching retirement he became a full time postal service employee before his retirement again.

On Sept. 23, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country until he was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946, as a corporal of the Marine Aviation Separation Unit. He married Lottie Rowe on Nov. 18, 1944, in Cheyenne. Mr. Swopes was a master craftsman at woodworking, carpentry and furniture building.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jerry Swopes of Noble, Leon Swopes of Texas, Donald Swopes of Moore and Wayne Swopes of Noble; three daughters, Dois Anderson of Noble and twins Twila Gray of Moore and Nila Barlow of Noble; a brother, Jack Swopes of Elk City, Okla.; a sister: Sylvia Norman of Texas; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
