Paul was the eldest of the three sons of Rev. N. P. and Carrie Catherine (Arford) France. He was a stand-out athlete in baseball and tennis at Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis), and taught mathematics and coached sports in high schools. Later held accounting positions in manufacturing and was a house painter in later life. He died as the result of head trauma in a fall accident at home.
